Radiographer Jobs — Getting your qualifications and experience recognised in Australia

Before you can work in an Australian Radiography job, it is essential that you undergo an accreditation process. This means getting your qualifications and experience formally recognised, so that you are legally able to register as a Radiologist and start working.

The Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR) is the national regulatory body which controls the accreditation process for all types of Radiographers in Australia. Overseas applicants need to contact AIR to have their skills recognized.

The Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR) accreditation process

During their accreditation process AIR will assess your undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, your clinical experience, and your level of English proficiency. This process can take up to four months, so it is advised that you contact AIR some time prior to your anticipated date of arrival in Australia.

After you have had your qualifications and experience recognised by AIR, you will also need to apply for a Radiographers licence in whichever Australian State or Territory you wish to work. Before granting these licences, however, all Australian States and Territories require applicants to have received accreditation from AIR.

Note: AIR usually requires applicants to provide original copies of their qualifications (sometimes with course transcripts included), together with English translations if they were obtained in a non-English speaking country.

Sonographer Jobs — Getting your qualifications and experience recognised in Australia

There are two regulatory bodies that Sonographers need to receive accreditation from before coming to work in Australia — The Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR) and the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR).

During their accreditation process AIR will assess your undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, your clinical experience, and your level of English proficiency. This process can take up to four months, so it is advised that you contact AIR some time prior to your anticipated date of arrival in Australia. Once you have had your qualifications and experience recognised with ASAR, you will be able to work as a Sonographer in all Australian States and Territories.

Note: AIR usually requires applicants to provide original copies of their qualifications (sometimes with course transcripts included), together with English translations if they were obtained in a non-English speaking country.

Due to current shortages of Radiographers and Sonographers, many employers offer great sponsorship deals to overseas-trained professionals who wish to work in Australia (excluding Sydney).
