OT Jobs — Professional Registration differs by State
Note on timeframes for professionals: Register with agencies up to two years before you arrive. Apply to specific job postings no earlier than one month before you arrive.
What do occupational Therapists need to do before they can work in Australia?
The first thing that overseas-trained Occupational Therapists need to do before coming to work in Australia is find about visa eligibility requirements and visa application processes. All this information and more can be found on the Applying for a Visa section of the Jobaroo website.
If you are still overseas it is a good idea to apply to Recruitment Agencies and Jobs up to a year before you arrive. This will help to determine which City and State has the best opportunities and assistance may be offered with professional Registration and your Visa.
Depending on which State or Territory they wish to work, Occupational Therapists may be required to have their qualifications formally assessed, and to then register with the relevant professional regulatory body, before they will be legally allowed to work.
Occupational Therapy jobs in the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia
Only in some States and Territories do International Occupational Therapists need to be registered with a professional regulatory body before they can legally work in Australia. The Australian jurisdictions where this is mandatory are South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory. Before Occupational Therapists can register in these jurisdictions, they need to have their qualifications and experience assessed by the Council of Occupational Therapy Registration Boards (COTRB).
Occupational Therapy jobs in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria
Occupational Therapists wishing to find a job in other Australian jurisdictions — including New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory — will not need to register with a professional regulatory body unless they wish to work in the public sector.
If this is the case, they will need to register with the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists (OT Australia). Registration with OT Australia also requires an assessment of Occupational Therapy qualifications, undertaken by COTRB.
Getting your qualifications and experience assessed by the Council of Occupational Therapy Registration Boards (COTRB)
There are two stages overseas-trained Occupational Therapists must go through to have their qualifications and experienced assessed by the COTRB.
The first stage — a desktop audit — can be done from an applicant’s home country. It involves applicants having their educational qualification/s assessed to ensure that they meet Australian standards. CORTB will also confirm that an applicant is registered as an Occupational Therapist in their home country.
The second stage of assessment involves a period of audited practice in Australia. After an overseas-trained Occupational Therapist has passed the Stage One desktop audit, arrived in Australia and secured employment, they will then need to undergo a COTRB-approved period of audited practice. This period of audited practice lasts six months, on a full-time equivalent basis.
